2.1 Important Industrial and Commercial Establishments
The map shows the location of important industrial and commercial
establishments in the country. It includes the location of
major industrial areas, industries, sewage treatment plants,
power and desalination plants and solid waste dump sites.
The location of major establishments and market places (souq)
is shown only for Doha municipality due to non availability
of locational data for other municipalities. The map is based
on the on-line geographic information made available by the
GIS unit of the Environment department and the Centre for
GIS in the Ministry of Municipal Affairs & Agriculture.
In Qatar, although the oil sector continues to dominate all
economic activities, there have been efforts and policies
by the government towards setting up several heavy and light
industries to diversify the source of national income and
complete the industrial infrastructure. The government has
set up industrial estates supplied with all essential facilities
and utilities. The country has the following main industrial
estates as shown on the map. These are:
A.
Doha Industrial Estate
This industrial estate was set up upon the instructions of
H.H. the Emir of Qatar to establish an industrial estate for
light and medium-scale industries and provides visible and
invisible services such as roads, lighting, gas, sewage, water
as well as an integrated service building.
The new industrial estate has a special management for control
and monitoring under the unified bureau policy granting industrial
license and land at the same time in accordance with specific
conditions. It is a pioneering estate in terms of services
and will be similar to modern industrial estates in the world.
It will accommodate hundreds of enterprises divided into nine
major sectors providing integration and coordination and constituting
an asset to national economy.
B. Dukhan Petroleum City & Mesaieed Industrial City
Dukhan City was one of the first sites in the State of Qatar
where petroleum was discovered and produced. In 2003 a strategic
construction plan was set up to develop Qatar Petroleum's
concession area and is to continue to 2022. 193 projects have
been selected and will be established within the next 20 years
in four stages at a total cost of about QR 708m.
Major heavy industries of the country are located in Mesaieed.
Important among them are the steel industry, petrochemicals,
chemical fertilizers and oil refineries. A port has been established
here for the exportation of crude oil. The first dock was
opened in 1976.
C. Ras Laffan Industrial City
This newly developed industrial estate spreads over an area
of 40 sq. km.
Ras Laffan is the center for gas liquifaction and conversion
and the LNG and GTL capital of the world.
It is developed to house a great number of complexes and facilities
of gas related industries and services such as processing,
exportation of gas, petrochemicals and refining of condensates.
D. Salwa Industrial Area
This area, 7 kilometres west of Doha, is where many medium
and light industries are located besides workshops and trading
establishments.
Apart from these, other small industrial areas include Umm
Bab (cement), El Karaaanah (sand washing), Neijah (compost
fertilizer) and Umm Al Afaai (quarries).
Most of the important souqs are located in the inner Doha
area besides important malls and super markets located in
different urban areas of the country. The government and private
commercial establishments are mainly located in Doha and Al
Ray/an. Establishments related to the manufacturing industry
dominate in the country, followed by textiles, readymade leather
and machinery equipments.
2.2 Qatar Chamber of Commerce and Industry (QCCI)
QCCI was established in 1963 as a government body in accordance
with Law No (4) issued in the same year. In 1990 Law No (11)
was issued to reorganize the QCCI's organizational structure
and transform it into an independent and public utility body,
representing the collective commercial, industrial and agricultural
interests of its members. The members of its board of directors
are chosen from the general assembly
by direct ballot.
The responsibilities of the QCCI include collecting information
and data of interest to the commercial, industrial and agricultural
community; supplying the government departments with their
requirements for data, information and advice on commercial,
industrial and agricultural matters; providing advice on establishing
bourses, markets and commercial, industrial and agricultural
fairs; issuing certificates that indicate the origin of goods
and nationalities of exporters and arbitrating on disputes
referred to it with the consent of concerned parties.
