Handshaking on meeting and departure is the norm. Coffee is generally served at meetings and it is polite to drink two cups. Visitors should avoid showing the soles of their feet, enquiring after female relatives or accepting anything with the left hand. Care should be taken not to express admiration for anything belonging to the host, as Arab custom would oblige him to offer the object as a gift. During Ramadan, visitors must avoid eating, drinking or smoking in front of Muslims during daylight hours. Alcohol generally is a sensitive issue in Qatar and expatriates should be discreet in drinking in front of Muslims. Women are expected to dress modestly in public places. Under some circumstances, photography may be impolite or illegal.
